Logan County Overview
Logan County Probate Court Details
The Logan County Probate Court is in the Logan County Court Center at 101 S. Main Street, Bellefontaine, Ohio 43311. Call (937) 599-7252 to reach the office. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday. This is a shorter Friday schedule than many Ohio counties, so plan your visit accordingly.
Both applicants must appear in person during these hours. That is the rule under ORC 3101.05. At least one person must live in Logan County. If neither party is an Ohio resident, the ceremony must take place in the county where the license was issued. You fill out the application under oath in front of the court. No one else can do it for you.
Note: The Logan County Probate Court closes at 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. If you plan to visit on a Friday, arrive early to allow enough time to complete the application.
Required Documentation
Each person must bring a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state-issued ID, or passport will work. You also need proof of your Social Security number. The court accepts the card itself or a tax document that shows the number. Under ORC 3101.051, your Social Security number will be stripped from the public record before anyone else can view it.
If you have been married before, bring a certified copy of each divorce decree. The court wants the date, case number, and which court granted every past divorce. If a former spouse died rather than divorced, bring the death certificate. You must also provide your full name, age, place of birth, occupation, and the names of both parents. The mother's maiden name is required if known. False statements on the application are a crime under ORC 2921.13.
Fees and Timing
The marriage license fee in Logan County is around $50. Call ahead to confirm the exact amount and accepted payment methods. You pay when you finish the application. There are no extra charges for the license itself.
Ohio eliminated its waiting period in 2001. Your license is valid right away. It remains good for 60 days from the date of issue, per ORC 3101.07. The expiration date is printed on the license. After 60 days, it expires. You can use the license anywhere in Ohio, not just in Logan County. If you miss the 60-day window, a fresh application and fee are needed.
Marriage Records Access
Marriage records in Logan County are public. ORC 149.43 guarantees that anyone can request copies during regular business hours. The court must respond in a reasonable time and at a reasonable cost. Social Security numbers are always redacted first.
The Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide index to marriage records from September 7, 1949, to the present. This covers all 88 Ohio counties. But it is just an index. Certified copies still come from the Logan County Probate Court. If you do not know which county a marriage took place in, the statewide index is the place to start. Below is a screenshot of the Ohio Department of Health's vital statistics portal.
For genealogy research, the Ohio History Connection may hold some older Logan County records. Marriage records from before 1899 often lack parents' names, so researchers should check census records and other sources for family connections. The Ohio Legal Help website provides a directory for the Logan County Probate Court with contact details and additional guidance.
Officiants and Certificate Filing
Under ORC 3101.08, authorized officiants in Ohio include ordained or licensed ministers registered with the Secretary of State, county and municipal court judges, probate judges, and mayors. Religious societies can conduct ceremonies under their own rules. The probate judge in Logan County can also officiate under ORC 2101.27, with any fee paid into the county treasury.
The officiant must file the signed marriage certificate with the Logan County Probate Court within 30 days of the ceremony. ORC 3101.13 sets this deadline. Missing it is a minor misdemeanor that can carry a $50 fine. A pre-addressed envelope comes with each license to make the return simple. Once filed, the certificate is entered into the county's permanent record books in order of receipt.

Logan County marriage records go back to 1818. Early records may only show names and dates. By the mid-1800s, records start to include birthplaces, occupations, and parents' names. If you hit a dead end, check neighboring counties. Some early settlers in the area married in adjoining counties before Logan County was fully established. The Ohio Supreme Court website can also point you to resources for navigating probate court records statewide.
Note: There is no statewide marriage index before September 7, 1949. For Logan County marriages before that date, you must contact the Probate Court directly.
