Crawford County Overview
Crawford County Probate Court
The Crawford County Probate Court is at 112 East Mansfield Street, Suite 103, Bucyrus, OH 44820. You can reach the office at (419) 562-8891 or (419) 562-1896. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The court handles marriage licenses, estates, guardianships, and other probate business for Crawford County.
Both people who want a marriage license must come in person. This is a requirement under ORC 3101.05. Each applicant fills out the form under oath, providing personal details like name, age, where they live, and parents' names. You sign the application right there in the court.
Application Requirements
Bring a valid photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, or passport. You need your Social Security number too. The application asks for your name, age, residence, place of birth, occupation, father's name, and mother's maiden name. If you know the name of the person who will perform the ceremony, that goes on the form as well.
Previously married? You will need extra paperwork. The names of all prior spouses and any minor children from those marriages are required. A certified copy of the most recent divorce decree is a must. Widowed applicants bring a death certificate. Making false statements on the application is a crime under ORC 2921.13.
Note: Crawford County's Probate Court has two phone numbers. Try (419) 562-8891 first, and (419) 562-1896 as a backup if the first line is busy.
Fees and License Duration
The marriage license fee in Crawford County is around $50. Confirm the exact amount and accepted payment methods by calling ahead. Ohio dropped its waiting period in February 2001. You can walk in, apply, and leave with a license the same day. No blood test is needed either.
Every marriage license in Ohio expires after 60 days. ORC 3101.07 requires this to be printed in bold on the license. If the wedding does not happen within 60 days, you need a new license and a new fee. The court cannot extend or renew an expired license.
After the Ceremony
The person who performs your wedding signs the marriage certificate and must file it with the Crawford County Probate Court within 30 days. This is a legal obligation under ORC 3101.13. The court gives a pre-addressed envelope with every license to make filing easy. If the officiant misses the deadline, it is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a $50 fine.
Certified copies of your marriage record cannot be issued until the officiant returns the signed certificate. So if you need a certified copy for a name change or other legal purpose, make sure the certificate gets filed quickly. Follow up with your officiant if you have not heard anything after a couple of weeks.
Who Can Officiate
Ohio law spells out exactly who can perform a wedding. Under ORC 3101.08, the authorized list includes ordained or licensed ministers registered with the Ohio Secretary of State, county court judges, municipal court judges, probate judges, and mayors of any city or village in Ohio. Religious groups may also perform marriages under their own rules.
To check if a minister is registered, call 1-877-767-6446. Do this before the wedding to make sure everything is in order.
Crawford County Marriage Records History
Crawford County was formed in 1820 in north-central Ohio. Marriage records have been kept from that year forward. The Bucyrus Public Library and local historical society have genealogy resources that may help researchers who are looking for older records. The Ohio History Connection maintains a statewide guide to marriage records across all Ohio counties.
Keep in mind that there is no statewide index for Ohio marriages before September 7, 1949. For anything before that date, you have to know which county issued the license. The Ohio Department of Health maintains the statewide index from 1949 onward, but certified copies still come only from the county probate court where the license was filed.
Note: Marriage records before 1899 in Ohio typically do not include the names of the couple's parents, which can make older research more difficult.
Public Records and Copies
All marriage records are public in Ohio. ORC 149.43 says that any person can ask to inspect public records during regular business hours. The court must comply. Social Security numbers are removed before sharing records, but all other details are available. You do not need to give a reason for your request.
For certified copies, contact the Crawford County Probate Court at (419) 562-8891. You can visit during office hours or mail a request. Include the full names of both parties and the date of the marriage. Certified copies carry the official court seal and work for legal purposes like name changes and proof of marriage.
Eligibility and Age Rules
Both people need to be 18 or older. If one applicant is 17, a juvenile court must file consent before the Probate Court can issue a license. Under ORC 3101.02, the other applicant cannot be more than four years older than the 17-year-old. The juvenile court checks that the decision is voluntary and that the marriage is in the best interests of both people. Nobody under 17 can get a marriage license in Ohio.
The court will turn you away if either person appears to be intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance at the time of the application, per ORC 3101.06. This is a firm rule, and the probate judge has the authority to make that call on the spot.
