How to Get a Marriage License
Both people must come to the courthouse in person. That is the law under ORC 3101.05. You cannot send just one person or do it by mail. Each person brings a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID all work. You need your Social Security number, though it will not show on the license. If you have been married before, bring a certified copy of your most recent divorce decree with the case number, date, and court name.
The application asks for each person's name, age, place of birth, residence, occupation, and parents' names. You also state who will perform the ceremony. The probate judge reviews the application and, if there are no legal issues, issues the license right then. There is no blood test and no waiting period in Ohio. The license is good for 60 days under ORC 3101.07.
Fees and Payment
The fee for a marriage license in Fulton County is around $50. Call the court to get the exact amount and find out what forms of payment they take. Some smaller courts only accept cash or money orders. Certified copies of the marriage certificate cost a few dollars each. Plan to order several copies if you will need them for name changes at the BMV, Social Security office, your bank, or your insurance company.
Marriage records in Fulton County are public under ORC 149.43. Anyone can ask to see them or get copies during regular hours. The court will take out Social Security numbers before showing the records, but everything else on the file is available to the public.
Authorized Officiants
Ohio Revised Code Section 3101.08 sets out who can perform a wedding in Ohio. The list covers ordained or licensed ministers registered with the Ohio Secretary of State, county and municipal court judges, probate judges under ORC 2101.27, mayors of any Ohio city or village, and the superintendent of Ohio deaf and blind education services. Religious groups can also perform the ceremony under their own church rules.
After the wedding, the officiant has 30 days to sign and return the marriage certificate to the Fulton County Probate Court. That deadline is set by ORC 3101.13. Missing the deadline can mean a $50 fine for the officiant. Once the court gets the signed certificate back, the marriage is on the official record and certified copies can be ordered.
Fulton County Marriage Records
Fulton County was formed in 1850. Marriage records go back to around that time. For recent records, contact the Probate Court directly. If you are not sure which Ohio county holds a particular marriage record, the Ohio Department of Health has a statewide index covering September 7, 1949, to the present. That index tells you which county has the record, but you still have to get the certified copy from the county court.
Before 1949, there is no statewide index. For older records, search with the Probate Court or check the Ohio History Connection. Early marriage records may only list the bride and groom, the officiant, and the ceremony date. Records after about 1899 usually include parents' names and more detail.

Correcting a Marriage Certificate
If there is an error on your marriage certificate, you can ask the court to fix it. Under ORC 3101.15, a person can file an application to correct a certificate. It must include an affidavit from at least one person who knows the right facts. The court may schedule a hearing, and if the judge is satisfied, the certificate will be updated. Act on corrections as soon as you spot a mistake. Waiting can make it harder to gather the supporting documents you need.
Fulton County sits near the borders of both Indiana and Michigan. If you live close to the state line, keep in mind that you must apply for a marriage license in the state where you want the marriage to be legally recognized. An Ohio marriage license obtained in Fulton County is valid anywhere in Ohio, but if you are an Ohio resident, the ceremony can take place in any Ohio county. For non-residents, the ceremony must happen in Fulton County specifically. The Ohio Supreme Court website has forms and self-help guides that cover marriage license rules across all 88 counties.
