How to Apply for a Marriage License

Both applicants must appear in person at the Greene County Courthouse. That is the law under ORC 3101.05. Each person needs a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID works. Bring your Social Security number too. The court needs it for the application, but it will not print on the license. If you have been married before, bring a certified copy of your most recent divorce decree with the case number, date, and court listed.

The application form asks for each person's name, age, place of birth, residence, occupation, parents' names, and the name of the officiant who will perform the ceremony. The probate judge reviews it on the spot. If nothing is out of order, the license is issued the same visit. No blood test needed. No waiting period. You can get married the same day.

The Marriage License Bureau in Greene County has its own hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. These are shorter than the general court hours.

Greene County Marriage License Fees

The marriage license fee is about $50. A court costs and filing fee schedule went into effect March 1, 2025. Contact the Marriage License Bureau at (937) 562-5284 to confirm the exact fee. Note that as of a March 2026 update, online payments were temporarily not available. Check with the court on current payment methods before your visit. Cash and money orders are typically accepted.

Certified copies of the marriage certificate are available at a small charge per copy. Get several. You'll need them for name changes at the BMV, Social Security office, and your bank. Each place usually wants its own original certified copy, not a photocopy.
