Sandusky County Overview
Sandusky County Probate Court
The Sandusky County Probate Court sits at 100 North Park Avenue, Suite 224, Fremont, OH 43420. The phone number is (419) 334-6200 and the fax is (419) 334-6210. Office hours run Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This court handles all marriage license work for the county. It also deals with estates, guardianships, and other probate matters, but marriage licenses are a core part of the daily workflow.
Both applicants must show up in person. No exceptions. ORC 3101.05 requires each party to appear before the probate court and complete the application under oath. You cannot have a friend or family member fill out the form for you. At least one applicant must be a Sandusky County resident, or the ceremony must take place within the county if neither person lives in Ohio.
Proof of residency is required. Bring something that shows your current address in Sandusky County. A driver's license with your address on it usually works. If your ID has an old address, bring a utility bill or bank statement as backup.
What to Bring
Each person needs a valid photo ID. Driver's license, state ID, or passport are all accepted. You also need your Social Security number. The court might accept a Social Security card, W-2, or other official document that displays the number. Under ORC 3101.051, Social Security numbers are stripped from the public record before anyone can view it. So your number stays private even though you provide it on the application.
Previously married? Bring the certified copy of your most recent divorce decree. The court needs the case number, the date of the divorce, and the court that granted it. If your former spouse passed away, bring a death certificate instead. Giving false information on a marriage application is a crime under ORC 2921.13. The court takes this seriously.
License Fees and Validity
The fee for a Sandusky County marriage license is approximately $50. Call the court at (419) 334-6200 to confirm the current amount and which payment methods are accepted. Most Ohio probate courts take cash, money orders, and cards. Some do not accept personal checks. You pay the fee when you complete the in-person application.
Ohio has no waiting period for marriage licenses. That rule changed in 2001 when the state ended the old five-day wait. Your license is valid the moment you pay and the court approves the application. It stays good for 60 days, per ORC 3101.07. The expiration date is printed right on the document. If 60 days go by without a ceremony, the license expires and you would need to start fresh.
The license is good across all of Ohio. You can get married in any county, not just Sandusky. That flexibility matters if you are planning a destination wedding somewhere else in the state.
Note: Sandusky County was formed in 1820. Marriage records here stretch back nearly two centuries.
Marriage Ceremony Officiants
Under ORC 3101.08, the people who can perform a wedding in Ohio include ordained or licensed ministers registered with the Secretary of State, county and municipal court judges, probate judges, and mayors of any Ohio city. Religious societies may also conduct ceremonies in line with their own traditions. The Ohio Secretary of State maintains a registry of licensed ministers if you want to verify that your officiant is authorized.
After the ceremony, the officiant has 30 days to file the signed marriage certificate with the Sandusky County Probate Court. ORC 3101.13 sets that deadline. Failing to file on time is a minor misdemeanor with up to a $50 fine. The court provides a stamped envelope with each license to make the return as easy as possible.
Sandusky County Marriage Record Access

For older records, the Ohio History Connection may have some Sandusky County marriage documents in their archives. Certified copies for legal purposes must still come from the Probate Court in Fremont. The Ohio Department of Health maintains a statewide marriage index from September 1949 onward, covering all 88 counties. That index helps you find which county a marriage was recorded in, but it cannot produce a certified copy.
Requesting Certified Copies
Call the Sandusky County Probate Court at (419) 334-6200 to request a certified copy of a marriage record. You can also visit in person during business hours or mail a request to 100 North Park Avenue, Suite 224, Fremont, OH 43420. Include the names of both parties and the approximate date of marriage. The court charges a small fee per copy. A certified copy carries a court seal and is accepted for legal proceedings, name changes, and other official purposes.
The Ohio Legal Help website provides a directory of probate courts with details on what to expect when you request records. It is a good resource if you are not sure what forms or fees apply. The Ohio Supreme Court website also has standardized probate forms that courts across the state use.
Note: Mail requests may take a few weeks to process. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check or money order for the copy fee.
